Isaiah Clark
Isaiah Michael Clark was a Black American student born on March 3, 2002, in West Baltimore and the younger brother of Keisha Loraine Clark. In January 2015, he was twelve years old and attended Calverton Middle School. His sister’s boyfriend, Marcus Washington III, became his basketball mentor.
Early Life and Background
Isaiah grew up with his mother, Mila, and Keisha, who was five years older. Between approximately 2012 and 2014, he noticed changes in Keisha’s behavior and presentation while she was being psychologically abused by Shanice. She stopped wearing bright colors and laughing freely, checked her phone anxiously, and often went straight to her room after returning home. Isaiah could tell that something was wrong without knowing why. After the summer of 2014, he watched her gradually become more expressive again.
Education
Isaiah was a seventh grader at Calverton Middle School in January 2015. He earned mostly B grades, with an A in mathematics and a C-plus in English.
Personality
Isaiah was observant, sincere, and direct. He noticed changes in his family members’ moods but did not always understand their causes. Before Marcus’s University of Maryland campus visit, Isaiah asked to come along and admitted that he would not see better basketball at the recreation center. The candor embarrassed him, but Marcus did not call attention to it. Isaiah was interested in basketball.
On weekends, Isaiah often slept until about nine, then ate heavily and filled the house with the noisy energy he kept more contained at school.
Relationship to His Body
At twelve, Isaiah was self-conscious about being among the shortest boys in his grade.
Physical Characteristics
At twelve, Isaiah stood four feet eleven inches tall and weighed ninety-three pounds.
Family and Core Relationships
Mila Clark
Mila raised Isaiah and Keisha in West Baltimore and closely monitored Isaiah’s school performance.
Keisha Loraine Clark
Isaiah observed Keisha’s withdrawal during the years of Shanice’s abuse and her gradual return to a more expressive life after the summer of 2014. Their sibling shorthand included teasing: when she told him not to burn the house down, he answered, “I’m twelve.”
Friendships and Social Connections
Marcus Washington III
Main article: Marcus Washington III and Isaiah Clark
Marcus taught Isaiah basketball in the Clark family’s driveway, corrected his shooting mechanics, and called him Zay. Isaiah responded to Marcus as a reliable older mentor who spoke to him without condescension. When Isaiah asked whether Marcus had always been tall, Marcus told him he had been the smallest boy on his team until fourteen and had grown six inches in one year. Isaiah kept that answer in mind when his own size frustrated him.
